Metaphysics and the Stock Market

Definition from the dictionary:

Metaphysics: the branch of philosophy that deals with the first principles of things, including abstract concepts such as being, knowing, identity, time, and space.

In the recent months, I have been pondering a lot about some mathematical theories, physics, metaphysics and also “first principles”.

“In philosophy, first principles are from First Cause attitudes and taught by Aristotelians, and nuanced versions of first principles are referred to as postulates by Kantians.”

In simpler terms, first principle can be known as the most basic truth.

BACKGROUND STORY

Few years back, I had a conversation with a gentleman from India. He shared with me that the farmers studied the lunar cycles, look at stars etc to do their farming. That led to a particular crop yield which will eventually determine profits or losses. That was the first time I started to wonder if astrology can help in generating profits in the financial markets.

Earlier this year around January, when everything is still ‘normal’, I was having coffee with two friends in Chinatown. We were discussing about 2008’s property bubble/financial crisis, would Covid lead to another financial meltdown and if there will be a repeat. Because it is a new cycle of 12 years, according to the Chinese Calendar. One of the friends was furthering his interest in Chinese Metaphysics at that point of time. We decided to take a step further and apply it to the stock market.

THE BIRTH OF A REALLY BAD IDEA

“You make yourself rare by combining two or more “pretty goods” until no one else has your mix.”Scott Adams

“The best startup ideas are the ones that seem like bad ideas but are good ideas.”Peter Thiel

Ideas from Scott Adams and Peter Thiel deeply influence how I think and process information. I am NOT trying to build a start up. But I simply want to approach this world with an innovative perspective.

Combining Chinese Metaphysics and Stock Investing is a pretty bad idea. How do I know? I went around to ask a few people about it. They all think I am crazy.

As long as there are people that think I am crazy, I know I am on the right path.

FRAMEWORK

For the whole of 2020, I have been working with my friend on this “bad idea”. Hence, I am writing this post as a mean of documentation for my own reference (categorized under metaphysics). It would way easier for me to search for information. There are bits and pieces of papers all around, so I would like to compile them all in my own blog. Anyway, I doubt most people would understand what we are trying to do.

The innovation of this method came from a combination of:
– Chinese Metaphysics
– Stock investing
– Sector rotation
– Option trading
– Bell curve of normal distribution
– Statistical study

FINAL THOUGHTS

I have always always believe in multi-disciplinary approach. There is never only one way to do things. Continuous improvement in our thought process, state management and skills would bring tangible benefit to each individual and the world.

The post is getting overly lengthy. I am definitely going to pen down more thoughts and to sharpen the framework. That’s it for now.
